Ummanda / Maraş Sinemilli Deyişleri

Ulaş Özdemir’s first album published in 1998 by Kalan Müzik, “Ummanda – Maraş Sinemilli Deyişleri” has the distinction of being the first ever album based on the musical culture of the Anatolian Alevi lineages known as ocaks. The Sinemilli ocak in the Maraş region is the lineage of many important minstrels, both in modern Alevi-Bektashi music as well as the general folk music repertoire, such as Tacim Dede, Mehmet Mustafa Dede, Sadık Hüseyin Dede and others. Representing Özdemir’s musical culture, some of the deyiş were recorded live by Özdemir himself; the rest are live village recordings of living masters such as Mustafa Manış Dede and Hüseyin İmir Afe. The recordings are accompanied by traditional instruments including the dede saz and ruzba.
